Santa Ana Castle

Santa Ana Castle is a defensive fortress that safeguards the history of Roquetas de Mar within its walls. This imposing monument, declared an asset of cultural interest in 1985, was key in shaping the urban settlement we know today.

This impressive castle originated from a tower built by the Nasrid monarch Yusuf I at the beginning of the 14th century, for the defense of the site against attacks from Christian and Barbary pirates. In the early 16th century, it became an essential watch tower to protect the production and shipment of the valuable salt produced in the salt flats.

Given the strategic importance of this enclave, the crown of Castille, during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, decided to build a robust square plan fortress with unequal circular turrets at its ends, one of them stronger, which would be used as an artillery bastion.

Throughout the 17th century, the castle suffered several earthquakes, attacks by the Turkish fleet, and long periods of abandonment due to economic scarcity. The 1804 earthquake devastated it, and it was not restored until much later.

Fortunately, in 1997, the Roquetas de Mar Town Hall initiated a project to completely reconstruct the castle, thus recovering its historical memory. The works concluded in 2003, and since then, Santa Ana Castle has been reborn as a vibrant cultural center.

Currently, it houses numerous art exhibition halls, notably its beautiful inner courtyard with sculptures. A dynamic space where talks, conferences, and concerts are held, keeping the history of Roquetas de Mar alive and connected with the community and its visitors.
