Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Area

Stop 12

The Punta Entinas Sabinar Natural Area is a unique semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystem, protected and declared a natural area by the Regional Government of Andalusia in 1989. Furthermore, it is part of the Arid Zones of Almeria Biosphere Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 1997.

This environment is a true mosaic of landscapes where nature and history go hand in hand. An area located on the coastal strip and composed of living dunes that reach up to 7 m in height, constantly shaped by the wind and the sea. Among them, species adapted to the environment salinity grow, notably the unique Juniper groves, Sabinadas, that give the area its name, mastic trees and halophytes.

But the true gem are the temporary lagoons and pools. Formed after rains, they are a magnet for life and transform theland into a paradise for aquatic and migratory birds. Here you can observe flamingo, gray heron, Avocet, ducks, and many other species, enjoying an explosion of wildlife near the urbanized coast.

This environment not only speaks of nature, but also whispers stories of the past. The old salt flats are vestiges of an important salt production activity that took place here for centuries. Today, these abandoned pools look like a large lagoon, transformed into a vital refuge for wildlife. And not far from the salt flats, standing like a watchtower, is the Torre de Cerillo, declared an asset of cultural interest since 1993. Originally Nazard from the 14th century, Philip II ordered the construction of the current edifice upon it in the 16th century. This tower was part of the coastal defensive system, protecting the salt flats and warning of the presence of pirates. A clear reminder of the need to protect the valuable resources of this land.

The Punta Entinas Sabinar natural area is an inspiring example of how nature resists and adapts, offering a privileged space for bird watching. This natural strip is bordered by pristine beaches where it is still possible to connect with nature in complete freedom and has numerous paths perfect for cycling or walking roots.
