Church of the Winds

Stop 2

The Church of the Winds is a small open air chapel with a modern, emblematic, reinforced concrete design that belongs to the parish of the town of Las Marinas. Built in 1972 by architect Fernando Casanyello Perez, intended for the celebration of mass in front of an open semi-circular garden. It is a space where a large number of faithful gather. An open air temple that allows people to connect with a spiritual and natural environment.

This religious building is part of the complex of constructions forming the Roquetas development from 1971, where one of the most appreciated values was that architectural constructions were fully integrated into the environment.

This church with its very simple lines is conceived as a platform suspended over a pool of water, becoming an architectural model in which urbanistic elements and the natural environment coexist in harmony. The church features a stone altar and a horizontal bell tower that announces and protects from strong winds.

The character of the construction is very well suited for its function in a relaxed holiday spot, very close to the beach and with sea views.

This religious site is a fascinating example of how contemporary architecture can create sacred spaces that inspire and move.

The open air chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Winds is unique in Roquetas de Mar, a work of art and a symbol of the municipality’s modernity.
