Turaniana Archaeological Site

Stop 7

The archaeological site of Torianana is a 13-hectare enclave that transports us to the origins of this coast in the ancient Roman city of Toriana and allows us to walk in the footsteps of past civilizations.

One of the most important human settlements in Almeda’s history, declared an asset of cultural interest in 1991. The remains of the site tell us of continuous occupation during several eras from prehistory until the 11th century, when Muslims were present in the territory, with particular relevance during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

It is believed that the name Turaniana comes from an important ancient Roman port that provided easy access to fishing and salt production. However, a continuous process of deterioration today prevents us from knowing all the details of the relevance this settlement had for the population of Roquetas.

Despite numerous works carried out, the site has faced challenges. Notably, the construction of a tourist complex in the 1960s with the tourism boom in Spain, altered the street layout and even led to the demolition of the Torre Quebrada, broken tower, a regrettable loss for archaeological heritage. Nevertheless, the findings have been revealing. Coins and a Roman amphora in perfect condition confirm the existence of the city of Toriana, while bowls, decorated jars and plates bear witness to the prolonged Muslim presence in the territory.

Turaniana is a unique window to understand the development and connect with the profound history of Roquetas de Mar. A place to imagine Roman sailors arriving in port, families living by the sea, and the different cultures that succeeded one another in this land. Take a moment to contemplate the landscape and connect with the profound history that lies beneath the surface.
