This wetland is located in the Ribera de la Algaida, also called El Bosque de Roquetas de Mar, and encompasses 74 hectares of nature, situated in the ancient Roman settlement of Turunana. Also nearby is the Poseidonia Barrier Reef Natural Monument, bringing together unique terrestrial and marine ecosystems in the province.<\/p>\n

This hypersaline wetland, formed at the mouth of the Algaida dry riverbed, is a vital ecosystem for local fauna. An environment covered by halophytic plants, those that survive and thrive on salinity. Rainfall does the rest by flooding the low-lying areas, causing salinity to rise and reach the surface. The lagoons closest to the sea change their color to reddish hues due to the high concentration of salt and algae. Its waters and dense vegetation of reeds and small tamarisk shrubs create a perfect habitat and a paradise for aquatic and migratory birds. Here, Avocets, Moorhens, or Gray Herons, among others, find a safe refuge to feed and rest.<\/p>\n
